“Training Clinicians in Assessing and Addressing Social Determinants of Mental Health”

Paul Rosenfield, M.D.
Associate Professor of Pychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Advances in biological psychiatry have elucidated genetic factors and brain circuits, but have had limited impact on patient outcomes, while addressing social determinants of mental health (SDOMH) has clear benefits. We will discuss strategies for training on SDOMH in medical schools, residency programs and continuing medical education, including data on what has been found to be most effective, and how to move from understanding to action, both proximally (such as identifying resources for individual patients in need) and distally (such as advocacy on policy and structural factors). Project-based learning, field trips and community engagement are creative ways to move trainees from feeling overwhelmed by social factors to feeling empowered to address them. We will spend time during the session to brainstorm further ideas for teaching and ensuring that SDOMH are a standard component in high quality psychiatric training and maintenance of certification.
